Service Description: Historic aerial photography of 1938 in Livingston County, NY were georeferenced by undergraduate GIS students of Dr. Stephen J. Tulowiecki (Associate Professor of Geography & Sustainability Studies, SUNY Geneseo) from 2015 to 2022. Each photo was scanned using a flatbed scanner, then cropped and contrast-adjusted in Adobe Photoshop, then georeferenced using ArcMap or QGIS software. Final photos were saved as raster layers in an ArcGIS geodatabase format. Each photo was georeferenced against modern aerial photography using 10 to 20 control points (e.g. street intersections, structures) and a second-order polynomial transformation. Positional accuracy is generally believed to be low for the photographs, but higher in locations with insufficient ground control points in modern aerial photography; these lower-accuracy photographs occur in highly forested areas and/or areas with large water bodies. Due to the age of the historic aerial photos, some images show signs of wearing, tearing, and handwritten comments. Collectively the photos achieve near-complete coverage of the county. Dr. Tulowiecki thanks the many students who worked on these photos over the years.
